Commencing in 2016, July became Fibroid Awareness Month. Currently several states and the District of Columbia recognize the month, with a grassroots push to make it a national month in the works.
Estimates say that over 200,000 women are affected in the United States only, and this event is to spread awareness about the disease, what symptoms women should be wary of, how and where to seek help.
Fibroids, (uterina myoma), are noncancerous growths in the uterus that can develop during a woman's childbearing years.
The cause of fibroids isn't well understood. Risk factors include a family history of fibroids, obesity, or early onset of puberty.
Symptoms may include heavy menstrual bleeding, prolonged periods, and pelvic pain
Treatments include medications and removal of the fibroid.
Fibroids are chronic, meaning they can last for years or even lifelong.
Supporters of the campaign are encouraged to wear white throughout the month of July.
